The European Parliament’s main base is in Brussels, where the vast majority of its meetings are held and where almost all parliamentary staff are based. However, EU Treaties stipulate that the European Parliament must meet in full session in Strasbourg twelve times each year. A decision to abandon Strasbourg can only be taken by EU heads of government on a unanimous basis.

As a result, all 732 MEPs have offices in both Strasbourg and Brussels, and it has been estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 MEPs, officials and support staff travel between Brussels and Strasbourg (a distance of 300 miles) for one week every month.

The cost of this monthly parliamentary trek to Strasbourg is at least £120 million annually . This is some 15% of the European Parliament’s budget.

Many people believe that the practice of holding European Parliament meetings in Strasbourg is shocking and completely unjustifiable waste of taxpayers’ money. John said “Every year, the European Parliament is forced to pour millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money down the plughole. A small community is uprooted each month and relocated 300 miles way for a four-day session that can easily be accommodated in Brussels is farcical”

John has given his support to an online petition that has already collected over one million signatures calling for an end to the Strasbourg travelling circus. Please support the campaign by clicking here and signing the petition today.
